NIHB Therapy Timmins: Five Things to Know Before Booking Mental Health Counselling

NIHB Therapy Timmins: Five Things to Know Before Booking Mental Health Counselling

The story begins with you. And it also began before you. Every step you make in your healing journey is a step you also take for those around you. The circle is strong, and you make it stronger. But not alone.

You may have heard that the Non-Insured Health Benefits (NIHB) program can cover mental-health counselling, which could be a place to continue your healing. But you may not be sure what you’re entitled to or how to access therapy support that respects your tradition, your way, your voice.

So often benefit programs can have unfamiliar terms and rules that seem to get in the way exactly when you're already dealing with something difficult.

If you're looking for NIHB therapy in Timmins, take some time to consider these ideas so your healing isn’t so hard.

1. Mental Health Counselling Is an NIHB Benefit

NIHB provides eligible First Nations and Inuit people - those with a status card - coverage for professional mental health counselling. NIHB will cover a set number of sessions per year, per person.

This benefit can work well with other mental wellness services that may be available through your community, provincial or territorial programs.

2. There Are Eligibility Requirements

NIHB isn't a universal insurance program.

Indigenous Services Canada currently offers coverage to registered First Nations people and recognized Inuit people, subject to residency and program requirements. For example, if you’re registered in Ontario, you must see a mental health professional in Ontario.

Some communities also manage benefits through separate arrangements, so confirming your individual coverage is important.

3. Up to 22 Hours Are Currently Available Each Calendar Year

If you’re eligible, you can currently receive up to 22 hours of counselling from an eligible therapist per calendar year. You can switch therapists, and you will qualify for a total of 22 hours.

Additional counselling may be considered case-by-case.

That doesn't mean every service or provider is automatically covered, however. The therapist must be registered with NIHB for you to receive coverage.

4. You Can Choose a Therapist

NIHB does not assign you a therapist. Which means you can pick the person who is best for you.

You can contact NIHB therapists of your choice to arrange appointments, and the NIHB regional office can assist in locating enrolled therapists.

That gives you an opportunity to think about fit.

Do you want someone experienced with trauma?
Anxiety?
Relationships?
Neurodivergence?
Identity?

You are allowed to ask.

Make sure to request an initial consultation to ensure it’s the right fit for you.

5. Ask About Billing Before the First Appointment

Therapists enrolled with NIHB submit eligible claims directly, but you should confirm billing arrangements, therapist eligibility, number of sessions you’re currently entitled to, and whether any payment could be expected before services begin.

Knowing this beforehand can prevent financial surprises.

Redbird Therapy Provides NIHB Mental Health Services

Redbird Therapy offers mental health and trauma treatment services through NIHB for registered First Nations and Inuit people. Its team includes several therapists with NIHB coverage, and you can have an initial consultation at no cost to ensure it’s a good fit for your needs.

Virtual appointments can make therapy accessible for Timmins clients who might otherwise have fewer choices because of distance.

What If You Don't Know What to Say?

You don't need a speech.
You don't need a diagnosis.
And you don't need to decide whether your problem is sufficiently serious.

You can say:

"I've been having a hard time."

A therapist can start there.

If you're seeking NIHB therapy in Timmins, understanding your coverage can remove some uncertainty from the process.

The emotional part doesn't need to be figured out in advance.

That's what the conversation is for.
